About the Day

January 9 marks NRI Day, also known as Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas, a celebration dedicated to the Indian diaspora. Established in 2003, this day commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to India in 1915, symbolizing the contributions of overseas Indians to the development of India. The event fosters engagement between the Indian government and the global Indian community, featuring cultural programs, keynote speeches, and networking opportunities. It highlights the achievements of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), encouraging their involvement in India’s growth and development.
